Currumbin Ecovillage is an innovative residential community that showcases best practices in residential ecologically sustainable development. The project involved landscape and environmental planning and co-design for a 220 home ecovillage in Gold Coast hinterlands most scenic valley. The Ecovillage is a Queensland Government EnergyWise and WaterWise Demonstration Project and involves significant partnership with community, universities, industry and government. The project was developed on degraded farmland on the exurban fringe of City of Gold Coast, a major resort city on Queensland’s South East Queensland coast. The developer, Landmatters, rehabilitated the site and protected its environmental integrity and biodiversity by preserving 50 percent of it as an environmental reserve. It is on a 300-acre (1.2 km2) site comprising 80% bushland, plus open spaces and 144 home sites. The Ecovillage is Australia’s most awarded residential development. The Ecovillage at Currumbin, is a project that has as one of it’s “caps” The World’s Best Environmental Development” (FIABCI Prix D’Excellence Award 2008). The project has been acclaimed with over 30 international, national, state and local awards.
