The Miyajimaguchi ferry terminal serves as the gateway to the Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO world heritage site which is renowned for its striking beauty and spiritual significance within the Shinto community. It provides the first, and for many, only, impression of Hatsukaichi City for the 4 million annual visitors the Island. Aging infrastructure and congestion create a profane and stressful experience for visitors traveling through Miyajimaguchi, which is at odds with the meditative and serene atmosphere fostered by the shrine which draws them there.
