Saint Kateri was a native American saint who was baptized at the sacred spring and lived most of her life at the 16th century Mohawk village on the site. In the 1930’s one of the Friar’s discovered the charcoal remains of the Mohawk village which was destroyed by the French. Today, the fully excavated site of Caughnawagha is up the hill through the woods about a quarter of a mile from the chapel and small museum located beneath. The Mohawks lived and farmed this location for about fifty years. The scope of this project involves a saint, a shrine, a sacred spring and a site with an incredible history. The proposal offers a vision for the preservation of Native American archeological remains, the protection of a sacred place of national significance and the restoration of an international pilgrimage site.
